Array top in rayon

January 31, 2021 By Chuleenan 6 Comments

I got the Papercut Patterns Array Top pattern last year at Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics‘ Valentine’s Day event (printed version is sold out on the New Zealand company’s online shop but you can get PDF version). Thinking back, that visit was likely one of the last times I was physically inside the store. Wow.

A month after the event, Alameda County issued a stay-home order. Now it seems like years ago instead of less than a year. The Berkeley store’s doors have remained closed for in-store shopping but they put the majority of their merchandise online and it is open for curbside pickup and they also ship worldwide.

At that same event, I got some lovely Nani IRO double gauze at Stonemountain to make the tunic version of the Array pattern, which you can make in three lengths — top, tunic, and dress. I’ve been trying to add more teal to my wardrobe ever since I made Papercut’s Sapporo Coat in a teal wool coating.

Nani IRO double gauze fabric - teal blue background with lines in dark blue and bright blue creating shapes

I didn’t want to cut into Nani IRO fabric until I made a muslin (a mockup or test version). Over the holidays I finally made a muslin of the Array Top to get a sense of how it would fit. My shoulders are a bit square and I wanted to see how the dropped shoulder would hang on me. I had this purple rayon in my stash and decided to use it and attempt a wearable muslin. There is plenty of ease in the pattern so I figured it would fit even if I cut it as is.

Size range

The size range for the Array Top goes from 1 (bust 29.9″/76 cm , waist 22″/56 cm, hip 32.3″/82 cm to 8 (bust 46.5″/118 cm, waist 38.6″/98 cm, hip 48.8″/124 cm). I made size 5, which has these measurements: bust 39.5″/118 cm, waist 31.5″/80 cm, hip 41.75″/106 cm.

Pattern adjustments

It’s a simple pattern — front, back, sleeves, and tie pieces. The rayon fabric I was working with was a bit fiddly so I decided not to make bias tape for the neckline, which is what the pattern calls for. Instead, I made a facing by tracing the front and back pieces around the neckline, making to about 2.5 inches (6.3 cm) wide. Then I had to figure out how to finish the raw edges and opted to pink them so the facing wouldn’t be visible. The fabric is lightweight and has a soft hand. If I folded over the raw edge or even serged it, I was afraid the facing would be visible.

The Array top design has a bias tape neckline that’s finished with topstiching. I didn’t want a topstich around the neckline so I handstiched the facing in place. I think the neckline looks pretty good. Here’s what the Array top looks like without the ties.

Array Top - Papercut Patterns - in purple

I topstiched the hem as instructed because I didn’t want to hand stitch it. This patterns has a center back seam, which you can barely see here.

Array top - back view

The design has you sew one tie piece to each side seam at the waist. But that means you must always tie it or you’ll have two long ties dragging behind you. If you attach the tie, you’d wrap it around and then tie it in front. But, I thought, what if you didn’t want the tie? So I decided to make it optional by sewing the two tie pieces into one long tie. This means that you’ll have a shorter tie and it will have a center seam.

I tied this with the center seam in front, criss-crossing in the back.

Array top in rayon with tie

Here’s the top tied with the center seam placed at the back and then criss-crossing at the front and then going around to tie at the front, which makes the ends quite short.

When I make the tunic version with the double gauze, I will add a little more ease around the hips. But otherwise the pattern fits well.

The sleeves

The sleeves are nice and full at the bottom and will be more poofy if you use a fabric with a crisper hand. You could finish the sleeves with elastic like I did here or just hem them. If you hem them then you’ve got statement sleeves with dramatic flare as you can see below from this image from Papercut’s website. You can make the fabric in a variety of fabrics — from wovens to knits.

Array dress version - Papercut Patterns

I have long arms and the sleeve length is fine. I think the sleeves would be long for most people so pay attention to the length of the sleeves, particularly if you make the version without elastic at the wrists.

Array Top with elastic on sleeves

Fabric weight

The weight of the fabric will have a big impact on the sleeves. This rayon is lightweight with a soft hand so the sleeves aren’t that dramatic. If I made the Array top in a medium-weight woven, the sleeves would be quite puffy at the bottom. If you want statement sleeves, use a fabric that is more crisp.

Heres another look, wearing it tucked in front.

Stay tuned for the Array top in the Nani IRO fabric. I’m not sure if I’ll go with elastic on the sleeves or just hem them. My issue with flared sleeves is that you have to watch them when you eat. If you reach over, the sleeve will just dip into whatever’s on your plate when you’re eating. Which sleeve do you like? The elastic poofy one or the flared? Let me know in the comments!

The rest of the ensemble

I’m wearing the Joan Trousers by the Friday Pattern Company. (I have only blogged about the pair I made in yellow.) I’m also wearing a self-drafted six-section cap I made several years ago and suede boots by Børn that I got on sale at Nordstrom last year.

Note on photos: I took these photos four days after the insurrection at the Capitol and did not feel much like smiling. These are grim days for democracy. Sewing is my respite from the enormous challenges we face with the pandemic raging in the United States, the dangers of white supremacy, and economic catastrophe. Stay safe.

I love your top, Chuleenan!! Personally, the version with the tie in front and elastic in the sleeves looks stunning, especially in that silky rayon!

Thank you, Barbara! I think I’ll make the teal one with the ties attached to the sides. I think with the tunic-length version, it will look better with the ties than without.

Today’s work wear on Me Made May 2026 - Day 11! 💐 Today’s work wear on Me Made May 2026 - Day 11!
💐
This is another @theassemblylineshop Cuff Top in a beautiful Liberty lawn (Peony Parade) my older sister gifted me when she was in London last December. I only had 1 meter so this is cropped version and I made the sleeves as long as I could. I also used 1 cm wide elastic at cuffs so sleeves would be longer. I didn’t quite have enough fabric for the back, so I pieced some scraps together. The fabric is busy so you can’t really tell. Sorry I didn’t take photos of the back.
🩷
The wrap skirt pattern is the Aura by @papercutpatterns - I won the pattern in a Me Made May giveaway last year. If you look closely, you can see a small oval pin I attched to the skirt front. That’s my preemptive way of making sure so don’t flash anyone.
😆
The teal fabric is a linen rayon blend. I can’t recall where I got it. I love the color.
💚💙
I haven’t made a wrap skirt in years - mostly because of the flashing issue. This skirt is a good addition to my work wardrobe.

I’m wearing my Christy cardigan by @just_patterns again (also worn on Day 3, see 3rd photo of that post). I love the sleeves!
💙
I paired it with a top made from a pattern from the Maker’s Atelier sewing book. The pattern wasn’t meant for stripes so I had to baste and ease to match the side seams. I made the top a couple years ago using discounted deadstock fabric from @stonemountainfabric
🤗
The skirt is hand sewn from a skirt pattern from the book Alabama Studio Sewing + Design. You’re supposed to leave a raw hem but it curled up and I didn’t like it so I hemmed it. It still curls up.
😆
So far I’m still enjoying taking photos. I doubt I will be able to make it to the end of the month but it’s really not about taking photos everyday. I didn’t make a pledge before I began posting but I’m considering which garments to give away at the next @bayareasewists handmade garment swap - as I go through my makes.

It’s the weekend so I’m wearing my favorite denim knit skirt (pattern from Alabama Studio Sewing + Design but with wide elastic at waist) with an old Toaster Sweater 2 by @SewHouse7. I rediscovered it this week and decided to wear it today.
💙
The sleeves aren’t really royal blue like they are in the photo but they are an intense blue. The sleeves are in a rayon knit fabric and the body is a cotton jersey.
🖤
Weekend comfort clothes!

I’m wearing my favorite version of Cris Wood’s Parasol Dress pattern in an Ankara print gifted to my by a friend.
💙
I wanted to show off the border print - which is how it became a maxi dress. But I realize a few years after I made it that it’s a bit too long. It would be less of a tripping hazard if it were tea length. So I think I will trim the border, shorten the skirt and attach the border to the bottom so I don’t lose that detail. I think I’ll wear it more if it’s shorter.
✂️
And because it’s a little chilly in the shade, I’m wearing my handmade bolero - handsewn in jersey knit fabric. Sewing pattern is from Alabama Studio Sewing + Design book.
💙
And I made the ribbon band on my hat.

It was a little chilly in the shade so when I went out to run an errand after WFH, I put on my Pilvi Coat (pattern from the sewing book Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style). Fabric is home decor from Britex Fabric several years ago.

I worked from home today so I’m wearing the Elastic Tie Sweater by @TheAssemblyLineShop and some old sweatpants. I dressed for the Zoom.
😆
I think this was the first top I made from this pattern. I made it several years ago and hardly ever wear it. So I’m giving it one last wear before I bid it farewell and give it away at the next Bay Area Sewists handmade garment swap next month.
👏🏽
It’s a little tight in the shoulders and the quilting fabric is a little stiff. Maybe someone else will wear it more.

I’m wearing red for a union event today. The indie sewing pattern is the Ora Pinafore by Soften Studio made using linen curtain fabric from IKEA.
♥️
The top is a Cuff Top by the Assembly Line - cropped and with the sleeves lengthened - cotton print from Britex Fabrics.
✂️
It was chilly enough this morning for me to wear my wool melton Nova Coat by Papercut Patterns. I got the fabric from Britex Fabrics in exchange for doing a blog post back in 2017 (when it was called the Sapporo Coat).
😉
Wool cap is self-drafted. I spent 5 minutes taking photos before heading to work. I put my phone on a tripod, using a photo timer app and took 20 photos. No photoshop, just cropping.

Me Made May - Day 4 👋🏽 I don’t think I’ve posted Me Made May - Day 4
👋🏽
I don’t think I’ve posted four days in a row in a long time.
😆
I thought it would warm up later in the day. It did not. I took the photos in the morning. Before I left for work, I grabbed a straw hat, which you can see in today’s Story.
🌥️
Today’s handmade garments used the following sewing patterns and fabric:
▪️ Hovea Jacket by Megan Nielsen in prequilted Nani Iro fabric from Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics, bias tape is also Nani Iro - leftover from a previous project
▪️ Scout Shirt by Merchant and Mills in a cotton linen blend from LA Finch Fabrics
▪️ Juno pants from Merchant and Mills in pinwheel corduroy from Stonemountain a few years ago. I finished them last weekend. I didn’t make a toile because there is plenty of ease due to front pleats and elastic in back. They are supersoft and comfy. However, not so sure about how baggy they are on me. I’ll need to experiment with other tops. Do you prefer tucked in or out? In seems better.
🤔
I don’t know how much I will be posting because I will only do it if I’m in the mood. I don’t want it to be a chore. Plus it’s not about posting everyday. It’s a wardrobe challenge. I haven’t really decided on a pledge other than figuring out what I will give away at the next Bay Area Sewists handmade clothing swap - happening in June. Perfect timing.

🐑
The skirt is a Style Arc dress pattern that didn’t work out. I chopped off the top and made it into a maxi skirt. I made it several years ago.
✂️
The tee is one my hubby had made in 2016 - yes 2016, not 2020 or 2024. He saw the dangers back then - and tragically, here we are.

Tweed cap is self-drafted.

If you’re interested in the sewing patterns used to make these handmade garments, here are the deets:
▪️Wildwood Vest by Helen’s Closet - made from a kit gifted to me by Needle Sharp subscription boxes - the first garment I’ve actually quilted!
▪️Viola Vest by Swim Style Patterns in a waffle knit fabric that had been in my stash for years because I washed it and probably should have put it in the dryer because the hand changed and the weave got a little tighter. I was annoyed so I put it away. Finally sewed it earlier this year. Ribbing is from Botani from a NYC trip a while ago. Ribbing is a little too heavy but I still like it. Swipe to the end to see close-up I took when I was in San Diego for work in Feb.
▪️Black boat-neck top is from She Wears the Pants Japanese sewing book - made a long time ago
▪️ Denim skirt is the Tedra skirt from Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style sewing book - made many years ago. It’s cut on the bias so it’s quite forgiving and still fits. 😆
▪️ Cap is self-drafted - my favorite tweed cap. I wear it all the time, usually backwards.
